About the Volunteer Fire Department:

The Saturna Island Volunteer Fire Department operates under the auspices of the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society.

The Saturna Island Fire Protection Society

The Saturna Island Fire Protection Society (SIFPS) is responsible for funding the training of firefighters, as well as the purchase, repair and maintenance of new equipment, the upkeep and maintenance of both Emergency Services Buildings, the purchase of supplies, etc., and to set service policy, plans and budgets as well as collecting tax funds for these purposes, and finally, to report annually to the community on operations and spending.

Saturna Island Volunteer Fire Department Mission Statement

The Saturna Island Volunteer Firefighters together with the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society form the Saturna Island Volunteer Fire Department. This organization exists to provide, within the limits of available resources, response to emergency incidents in the Fire Protection District. The focus of our efforts is to deliver appropriate interventions and community education to preserve life, property, our community and in general promote fire and life safety.

As volunteer firefighters and community members in a position of trust we acknowledge certain responsibilities:

  • To residents and visitors, a high quality of service characterized by integrity and willingness to maintain recognized training standards.
  • To Saturna Island Volunteer Fire Dept., our commitment and dedication to maintain and enhance organizational effectiveness.

  • To ourselves, personal and professional growth taking opportunities to gain new knowledge and accept new challenges.

The Saturna Volunteer Fire Fighters Association

recruits, trains and deploys volunteer fire fighters to meet the service requirements on Saturna Island. They also advise the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society on priority of funding, policies and strategic operational requirements.

About the Volunteer Fire Fighters:

The Fire Fighters Association practices on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Fire Hall .

Community Involvement:

The Fire Dept. hosts, and is involved with, various community events and fire prevention outreach programs.

  • On Halloween night, the Fire Dept. hosts an evening bonfire, hot dog roast and fireworks display for the kids and families on Saturna at the Saturna Island Recreation & Cultural Centre.
  • Annual fundraisers include two Pig Barbecues, held in the Spring and Fall at the Saturna Island Recreation & Cultural Centre, and the hosting of the popular “dunk tank” at the Lamb Barbecue on July 1 of each year.
